So, it looks like all GMG writer s have changed all their avatars (I hate that word) to the GMG Union Logo. I guess they have 2 days left in their contract. I vote, in the event of a Kinja strike, that Jalopnik have Oppo take over the FP.

Everyone in the country gets a Tercel. We’re opening up the production lines again. Chicken tax is repealed and Tercel’s and Toyota pickups will be the only two options for personal vehicles. All police cars will be super cars, and the presidential limo will be a Morgan three wheeler.......... oh wait I forgot we weren’t talking about when I become president. Baby steps, take over GMG and then the world

I've got my own Union contract negotiations to worry about. They're trying to take away our pension.

Anyone currently vested will still get theirs, but our vestments will stop increasing with service and no new employees would be able to get a pension.

No one likes a scab. Don’t be one.
Giving
#content
away for cheap or free because folks are on strike only really helps out Jalopnik’s slimy deadbeat dad of a parent company, not the good people of Jalopnik itself.
The actual GMG full-time crew deserves a fair contract before they’re sold off to
who knows
who’ll do
TBA
with this joint.
I don’t know who’s finally going to
buy this place, but I can see why my ex-comrades in blogs
want t
o want to nail down as much as possible now
to get at least some stability through the sale process
.
That means fighting for a
decent set of protections for the staff, their pay, their
benefits
and (perhaps most
importantly on my
end
as
I refuse to freelance
for
spineless
corporate
shills
)
their current editorial standards.
So, if you enjoy your continued ability to post on Oppo and also rather like some of us goofballs who end up on the front page, it’s
also in your best interest for the full-time staff to enshrine some modicum of fair treatment into a union contract sooner rather than later. I mean,
look at how Univision treated its other
departments as opposed to GMG when they made major layoffs across the company
. Having a contract in place
and an organized, collective
voice to negotiate big evils like that
saved this website’s butt.
I’m not in GMG’s bargaining unit anymore, so my avatar’s still a Puffalump, but needless to say
they have my support. That Puffalump suffers no fools.

junk,

I mean, t
here’s a pretty easy solution to avoiding negative media coverage: don’t do bad stuff that earns you negative media coverage. Treat your employees fairly, don’t squander company money on expensive executive gifts before announcing a huge round of layoffs, don’t install friends in high-paid roles who don’t actually do much, etc., etc. , yadda yadda, you get the idea. I mean, it’s not even an “it costs $0 not to be like this” situation as you’d probably even
profit
by not running your own company into the ground!

I agree that Univision is a disaster, and they could have done alot of things better. however, regardless of what U nivision did I doubt the editors/writers at Deadspin, Jez, & Splinter would ever be happy. They are constantly looking for something to be outraged about. Splinter has torn down every democratic presidential nominee for no reason whatsoever except so they can produce the rage-clicks.

I’ve seen tho
se people happy before, though, so I know it’s possible.
I think the problem is of companies expecting to buy their own personal cheerleader when they purchase a media network
full of journalists who will naturally want to cover the news even when it’s not very flattering news about their own company’s owners.
By default, you’re buying into a place with a bunch of naturally curious, critical writers with one of these companie
s. To think otherwise is, um,
m
ay I suggest buying a PR firm
instead?
